The Bitcoin Economic Model & The Bitcoin Network Model

Bitcoin's economic model is the foundation for a whole new internet architecture, the Bitcoin network model, but many people dislike the idea of replacing the current TCP model with a 'pay to view' or 'pay per click' model in which the entire internet is run on top of an economic model.
In the Bitcoin model, a mouse click costs 1/10000th of a penny, a google search might cost 1/100th of a penny, a webpage might cost 1/10th of a penny and a Netflix video might cost a penny per minute.
Why is this important? It opens up a whole new realm of possibilities in terms of how you get paid for creating content, and it opens up huge new opportunities for entrepreneurs to open businesses based on micropayments.
In simple terms, an internet based on Bitcoin allows users to set the price at which others can open a connection to them. In other words, if you want to call me, I can choose how much you have to pay to talk to me. If you're my best friend, I can charge you less than a penny per minute. If you're my ex-girlfriend, I can charge you $5 per minute. It's high enough that if you have to talk to me, you can call me, but you won't waste my time... and if you do, I can always raise the price again.
It sounds like a frivolous example, but take the model and apply it to advertisers. How many adverts do you get bombarded with every day that you don't want to see? In your youtube videos for example? Or on your facebook feed. Well, in the bitcoin model, where the internet itself is built on bitcoin, you can charge advertisers to open a connection to you. So that Grammarly advert you hate? You can charge them $100 to watch their advert. Or, you can set a low rate, like $1 and if they think you're worth it, they can set a budget as to how many advertising dollars they're willing to waste on trying to acquire your custom. But crucially, YOU GET THEIR CASH.
It's a much better model. If you don't want to see any Grammarly adverts you just set the rate at which Grammarly can connect to you to $10,000 per second and never hear from them again.
In Dimely, you can set the rate at which others connect to you. So let's say you're an English teacher, or an online Psychotherapist, or a Legal Consultant. You can charge customers for your time. You set your rate per minute, and they connect to you for as long as they can afford to. You can even negotiate the price in the call, and adjust your price for different clients and the blockchain acts as a permanent record of the exchange which is useful for contractual purposes.
Once you get your head round this fundamental idea, then you start to realize the possibilities. You can charge people to open a connection to you, and your content.
In an enterprise situation, you might be a Hollywood movie studio, publishing a movie to the blockchain. It might cost you $100,000 to upload a single movie at today's prices, but you could stream the movie direct to people's wallets, and they'd pay $1 a time (for example). If you have a million views, you've just made $900,000 revenue. That's a good peer-to-peer distribution model for Hollywood movies, but you can do the same for music, self produced or mass produced, as well as art and literature, blogs, websites, and any other kind of data you can think of.
That's Bitcoin.

Hi, I'm releasing a new version of my Lightning Network Game "PenguinShooter"
Basic info about the game:
If you don't know it already, it is a RPG in which you fight some monsters and level up. In that game you need to do Bitcoin micropayments via LN.
You can buy monsters, weapons (e.g. apples), a tiger, open a door...

This is a just a simple demo game
This game has some flaws and is not the best game in the world. I developed it alone in my spare time. It should show what is possible with Lightning Network payments. Not more... Probably not many people will want to livestream this game, but you can test if it works on your computer and see that payments via a website affect the events in your game. It should be a proof of Concept and show that it's already possible with LN. I would be happy if there are some people out there who try to do a livestream and let the viewers pay some invoices. I streamed two time on Youtube and it was much fun when strangers tipped me satoshis to spawn monsters in the game, freeze me or buy me a new life. I just don't have enough follower to do an entertaining stream. That said, if you want to give it a try, i would be very happy. You can connect to your own node and keep the money that you raise! THE CASE FOR SOLVING THE NEWSPAPER CRISIS:
  (these are just my thoughts, I dont know that this will happen, i just think it will) 
   
So intentionaly or not it, back in the year 2017, Iota, together with Satoshipay, solved the newspaper industri crisis, and no one noticed, until it was to late. 
   
In 2017 Satoshipay a small it payment company, switched from using bitcoin (satoshis), to iota as payment in their micropayment system. 
   
Why you ask? Two simple words, Fees - Scalability. Blockchain has the one we don't want and doesnt have the one we want. Enter the DAG. 
   
We read news and info on the internet every day, and newspapers, before we had to buy them on paper. Now we just dont.   
 
Many papers try to survive with revenue from selling add space, and by locking some content behind subscription pay walls. We dont read those, we just dont. And newspapers are starting to understand this. Why would you have a subscribtion for something when you just want to read an interesting article now and then?   
It doesnt make any sense, handing out your information, credit card details, canceling your subscription, resubscribing etc. 
 
 
Now what if there was a way that if you saw something interesting, an article about cryptocurrencies perhaps. You could pay 2-3 cents just to read that article, simply buy clicking a button in your browser, no credit card or name details, no hazzle, and no stupid subscription.  
 
Would that not be cool?   Would you be internested in paying 2-3 cents for a newspaper article, or an article you really want to read?
No form fill-ins, no credit card details, just one click pay, and read.
For good interesting aritcles, I would be willing to pay that, if there is no hazzle.

Subscription doesnt work for newspapers, micropay per view does. As long as the newspapers understand this and dont get greedy, they now have the keys to their survival available.

I. Introduction

In the world of Bitcoin, one startup has taken the community by storm. ChangeTip, a service that allows users to "tip" minute fractions of a cent to one another on online social media, has been rapidly accumulating a rabid, loyal fanbase of people spamming thinly-veiled bot-generated advertisements, in a decidedly clumsy attempt at native advertising.
More interestingly, ChangeTip doesn't even actually use Bitcoin -- it maintains a centralized, internal ledger of "who" has "how many bits" and then, when the user is ready to cash out, pockets the ledger-balance of "bits" and delivers dollars to their banking account. At no point in the entire process is a user does a user ever actually have to touch bitcoin, and at no point in the entire process of tipping is any money actually being moved around on the blockchain. Essentially, ChangeTip is a Bitcoin-based startup that in no way utilizes Bitcoin, save for the fanatical frenzy of the community of bagholders.

II. Metholodogy

ChangeTip manipulates the bitcoin bagholders into shilling. These bagholders try to encourage new recruits into the cult by tossing an inconsequential amount of money -- say, $0.0001 (or 1/100th a penny) at a potential recruit. The relationship is mutually beneficial & serves two purposes:
  • ChangeTip: gets an excuse to post its thinly-veiled native advertisement anywhere on social media (especially reddit)
  • Bitcoiners: get a way to try to indoctrinate other people into the cult at virtually no expense to them, thus potentially driving up demand and thus the price of a bitcoin (since supply is roughly fixed)

III. Privacy Concerns

Bitcoin is, of course, heralded by renowned sources such as /bitcoin as being an anonymous / pseudonymous way to send "money" to anyone, anywhere, instantly*.
ChangeTip, however, requires you to "link" your social media accounts to ChangeTip to function. Essentially, this means that with minimal effort and a few database queries, ChangeTip is able to create an online "fingerprint" of anyone using the service. For example, I could know that TulipCoins is also "Mike Hockhertz" on facebook, and can be found under the twitter handles @JIDF_4_LIFE and @WellsFargoCustomerSupport.
Why is this so alarming? Because ChangeTip doesn't actually seem to have any business model. From the time the company began til the present, ChangeTip has generated a whole $0.00 of revenue. There is an appropriate adage to cite here: "If you're not paying for it, you're the product." I will note that ChangeTip suggests that at some point in the future they will start taking a 1% cut of all "tips", however, as we will show later, this is probably a red herring.
To compound this problem, ChangeTip also enables users to "link" their banking account, and thus "cash out". As you can imagine, the possibilities are limitless for abuse here -- a single company knowing your entire social media makeup, and your bank account, and thus knowing your true identity as well. Needless to say, it is surprisingly accepted in bitcoin services for a service that connects-the-dots so much as it were given the anonymity/pseudonymity-intense community of bitcoin.
"But wait!" I hear you say -- you don't have to cash from from ChangeTip. You can send your money to another wallet and later cash it out at a Bitcoin Exchange. Yes, this is true, but forgetting an important key detail: the company that just invested $3.5 million in & effectively owns ChangeTip ("Pantera Capital") also has invested heavily in 2 of the biggest Bitcoin exchanges -- those being the Slovenian-run BitStamp and US-based Circle. The point is, even if you make the effort to move over to either of these exchanges, you can still be tracked (and rather easily at that).
* Your experiences may differ by up to 6 hrs. Numerous middleman fees & preposterous volatility may will apply. Drink the kool-aid responsibly.

IV. Shill Bots

ChangeTip seems to employ 2 kinds of Shill bots, in addition to their main ChangeTip bot. Important to note, ChangeTip has already been outed for running what I call "Giver" shill bots recently.

That's what I got from going through 6 pages of the bots history. I can't even do this anymore, the shilling is just so fucking pathetic & what's even more pathetic is that its pretty goddamned obvious who is running it. Gee, I wonder who has experience writing reddit bots & trying to sneakily advertise their spamware through reddit comments?
The bot owner (aka, ChangeTip) apparently deleted all their posts after someone figured out what they were doing (click context on any of the posts in the user history). Fortunately, the idiots behind said bot didn't realize that if you just click "delete" on a comment in a thread, it deletes it from that thread, not from the user account, so we now have a living testament of the sad extents of shillery one very sad company will go.

V. ChangeTip's Balance Sheet

This is what I originally was writing this post about before assuming the whole 60 minutes schpiel. As has recently been pointed out elsewhere in /buttcoin, the founder of ChangeTip Nick Sullivan recently claimed to the New York Times that ChangeTip had transmitted approximately ~$250,000 USD as of February 1, 2015. Numerous users pointed out that this was more than double the previously reported amount (as displayed on their front page) of $90,000 USD.
However, for the sake of argument, I am going to make the following assumptions, which are extraordinarily optimistic and represent a "best case" scenario for ChangeTip.
  • Suppose Nick Sullivan is correct that they have transmitted $250,000 USD (again, actually it's $90,000 USD)
  • Suppose that ChangeTip has had a 1% fee in place from Day One (actually, they still charge no fee, i.e. 0%)
  • Suppose that ChangeTip has one employee (actually, they have at least 4 employees)
  • Suppose that ChangeTip has only been operating for 3 months (actually, its closer to >12 months)
Using the above suppositions, we can deduce the following:

Best Case Total Revenue:

$2,500.00

$250,000.00 * (1% fee) = $2,500.00 

Best Case Monthly Revenue:

$833.33/mo

$2,500.00 / (3 Months) = $833.33/mo 

Best Case Yearly Revenue:

$9,999.96/yr

($833.33/mo) * (12 Months/Year) = $9,999.96/yr 

Best Case Employee Salary:

$9,999.96/yr OR $4.81/hr

Federal Minimum Wage = $7.25/hr = $15,800.00/yr ($9,999.96/year) - ($15,800.00/year) = $-5,800.00 ($4.81/hr) - ($7.25/hr) = -$2.44/hr // again, this is assuming there is only 1 employee who receives all the money the company brings in over a year // as you may notice, ChangeTip cannot afford even a single employee being paid the federal minimum wage 
At this point, I need to point something out to make it exceptionally clear. We've already used the absolutely-most-positively-exaggerated-and-optimistic figures conceivable to look into ChangeTip's balance sheets and we've found that even using those incredibly one-sided figures, ChangeTip couldn't even possibly pay for a single employee who works for minimum wage.
What I wanted to make clear was this: mind you, we're not even taking into account business expenses such as: taxes, office space, infrastructure, marketing, human resources, developers, testers, requirements, customer support, business planners, accounts payable, executives, dividends to shareholders, reinvestment in the company, etc. You know, what a business actually costs to run.

VI. Conclusion

Back to ChangeTip: on its current trajectory, it is not a viable company. I am certain that the people who work for it are well-meaning, reasonable people. But the lack of a revenue stream is an inescapable fact. The math portends an unsustainable cash flow; they will ultimately have to fold or else change their business model. When the music eventually stops, our identities will be up for sale. Even if the company manages to stick to its current avowed business plan until bankruptcy, there is no telling what others will do with the ChangeTip data.
Feel free to double check calculations, but I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that ChangeTip is a gigantic PII-vacuum waiting to explode. I would feel bad for the changetipping bitcoiners, but in all honesty: this is the free market -- this is what they asked for -- this is what they deserve. Maybe the next ChangeTip will want to work on its reputation, amirite guiz?

This game has some flaws and is not the best game in the world. I developed it alone in my spare time. It should show what is possible with Lightning Network payments. Not more... Probably not many people will want to livestream this game, but you can test if it works on your computer and see that payments via a website affect the events in your game. It should be a proof of Concept and show that it's already possible with LN. I would be happy if there are some people out there who try to do a livestream and let the viewers pay some invoices. I streamed two time on Youtube and it was much fun when strangers tipped me satoshis to spawn monsters in the game, freeze me or buy me a new life. I just don't have enough follower to do an entertaining stream. That said, if you want to give it a try, i would be very happy. You can connect to your own node and keep the money that you raise! Ethereum’s ecosystem is growing so quickly, very exciting news has a habit of coming out of nowhere. That said, there are more than a few things to have on our radar. Thanks to help from this community, here’s a current list. As always, what am I missing?

One very powerful aspect of Ethereum’s blockchain is it allows both formal relays between blockchains as well as general interoperability between chains. Relays allow Ethereum to empower other blockchains, basically letting these more classic chains (like Bitcoin and Dogecoin) use Ethereum as a service for smart contracts. This “bonded sidechain” is more powerful/flexible path to using smart contracts than building non-currency agnostic chains. Similarly, interoperability is a classic concept in software development with over 30 years of history. Ethereum’s Virtual Machine (EVM) greatly facilitates multi-chain interoperability – which could allow private chains to communicate with Ethereum’s public chain. Basically, Ethereum facilitates “chaining all the things”. In other words, even future private chains could interoperate with the Ethereum public blockchain to have a gateway between their secured private chain and the more global public chain. Private chain development is a GOOD thing under this model, even if that private chain is not an Ethereum fork.

Many of Ethereum's 100+ DApps will fail, but it only takes one to succeed to bring Ethereum to the mainstream. That said, sadly, there will also be scams. We should never forget Bitcoin's NeoBee or any of the MANY failed exchanges. As a community, we'll want to keep a close eye out in more ways than one. Be enthusiastic but critical - with transparency being absolutely key to trust.

Brave launched a new version today that features a private browsing mode that automatically starts inside a Tor session. The Brave team says the new "Private Tabs with Tor" feature will be helpful for users who are looking for additional protection that goes beyond the local PC.
Private browsing sessions were invented to wipe data from the browser after a browsing session is closed. But this type of browsing is not opaque to ISPs and the websites a user accesses, which can log traffic originating from the user. Brave's Tor-integrated private browsing sessions anonymize the user's IP address by passing the browser traffic through the Tor network.

Earlier this month, security researcher Vinny Troia discovered that Exactis, a data broker based in Palm Coast, Florida, had exposed a database that contained close to 340 million individual records on a publicly accessible server. Facebook and Google use 'dark patterns' around privacy settings, report says
Facebook, Google and Microsoft push users away from privacy-friendly options on their services in an "unethical" way, according to a report by the Norwegian Consumer Council.
It studied the privacy settings of the firms and found a series of "dark patterns", including intrusive default settings and misleading wording. The firms gave users "an illusion of control", its report suggested. The report - Deceived by Design - was based on user tests which took place in April and May, when all three firms were making changes to their privacy policies to be in compliance with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In a sign of things to come, California governor signs GDPR-style privacy law
The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, which goes into effect from 2020, mirrors many of the provisions of GDPR in that it puts strict regulations in place as to how online companies deal with customer data.
At its crux, the legislation gives California residents the right to know what data a company has collected on them as well as the ability to control what a company does with that data. Upon request, companies operating within the state must now disclose what information it collects, why it collects the data and to whom it sells the data. Consumers will have the legal right to compel companies to delete any data a business has gathered about them or opt out of their data being shared or sold.

Over the years, the Maidsafe team has been cooking up a smorgasbord of algorithms. They’ve received 20 granted patents (and 12 pending) and run countless test networks. The main interest here is not rehashing a long history but seeing what comes of subsequent Alpha releases.
What is MaidSafe and the SAFE Network?
MaidSafe is a company that is designing and implementing what they call the SAFE Network - a next generation decentralized and secure network. The SAFE (Secure Access For Everyone) Network is a new secure and decentralized data management service that is built by sharing the unused computer resources of the individual network participants.
Each user of the SAFE Network provides a part of their computer resources: data storage space, processing power, and Internet connectivity thus forming a large decentralized network.
The SAFE network puts its user’s safety and security on top of everything else and so the user data is encrypted and broken up into chunks that are spread among the users of the network. The people that participate in it are not actually aware of the data they have been asked to store on their systems, not they have direct access to what it currently stored on their computers.
Furthermore as a user if you share some of your unused computing resources on the SAFE network you are going to be compensated for doing so and get paid in Safecoin crypto tokens.
The SAFE network is not being controlled by a single large entity or a multiple global ones, it is not controlled by anyone in fact as it is decentralized and the users participating are what is essentially building up the network itself. The safenet is based on nature and how insects react to circumstances, through the study and observation of nature and the social structure of ant colonies. These studies have inspired simple yet profound solutions to complex networking issues that are integrated into the core of the SAFE Network allowing the network to be fast, secure, scalable and highly efficient.
Even Maidsafe who created the safenet won’t be able to alter the network to make it less efficient once it is launch. The network won’t allow less efficient upgrades, only ones that would make it better! How crazy is that! So once it is live, you cannot shut it down anymore.
So without people like you, the future user of the network there will be no network. There will be no privacy violations weather you decide to host your own website on the network, visit a website somebody else already made, create or run an application or just provide some of your spare computing resources to help make the SAFE network bigger and stronger.

This is truly mind blowing where we are at now with peer to peer and the possibility are endless. What can we do on the Safe network?
Safenet will evolve as more and more developer create new program for it. But to start with, you will be able to create website that cannot be taken down or censored and upload sensitive files that only you can read from anywhere in the world. There will be video chat like skype, and everything else the current internet can do.
When the full vision is realized, the Safe Network will be a self-managing, self-correcting network. How much does it cost to use safenet?
Safenet is totally free to use. The only cost is to offer a part of your hard drive to host part of the network. The more you offer, the more you can upload on the network.
What is Safecoin (MAID)?
Safecoin is a digital crypto currency token that is in the heart of the SAFE Network. It can be thought of as the oil in the engine of the SAFE Network, and is used as a way for all users of the network to be compensated for the value they provide.
You can think of Safecoin along the ways that Steem Dollars or Steem Power works on Steemit, you get rewarded these for your contribution on the network in the form of useful and interesting posts as well as voting for others. It is not exactly the same thing, but think along these lines.
SafeCoin Is the fuel that drives MaidSafes adoption and use. Safecoins can be purchased, or they can be earned by Farmers or Builders. They are stored within users wallets and provide access to the networks services and applications, or can be bought and sold on exchanges for bitcoin or cash. Safecoins are being distributed entirely automated with no human intervention by an algorithm.
Only 4.3 billion MaidSafeCoins will ever be in circulation at one time and each coin will have its own unique identity. Furthermore Safecoins will be "recycled" when they are being exchanged for network services, so there will be a new supply of coins for users to earn.
Safecoins are given to users in return for them providing some of their unused computing resource to the network. These include free storage space, processing power, and Internet connectivity, this process of providing your resource and earning Safecoin in return on the platform is referred to as "Farming". You can think of this as the "mining" for SafeCoin if you are a crypto currency mining, but instead of using only CPU or GPU power to help sustain the network you are sharing parts of your computing resources to be used by the network, so the SAFE network uses Proof of Resource "mining".
“Farmers” provide their unused computing resources to the network. The more they provide, the more they are paid. they can also contribute more than just space, They can contribute processor power as well which will be used as a Network Based Replacement for Server-Side Processing, so low spec devices (e.g. smart phones) would have no problem using apps that require huge processing power, it will also be convenient for universities and some institutions doing scientific computation (no need to buy expensive mainframes anymore they could just use safenetwork, which would be cheaper and faster)
“Builders” are the application developers. They can earn Safecoin in two different ways. Firstly, they can design applications, and the more an App is used the more they are paid. Secondly, they can assist with bug fixes and new features, which in turn strengthens the core of the SAFE network.
What is PtP (Pay the Producer)? It's a proposed feature to reward anyone who PUTS (uploads) public content with their wallet address (watermark). When data chunks are requested via GETS, the SAFE Network rewards the wallet address associated to those chunks. In simple terms, the more popular your content (video, music, art, games, APPS, etc) is requested by clients, the more rewards you earn. The reward can be Safecoin, or SAFE GB, Divided Safecoin, or some other variation, Pay the Producer rewards are network rewards and not paid for by the user.
Pay the producer reward is determined independently of the farmer's reward. It does not reduce the farmer's reward if a "pay-the-producer" pay address is associated to the chunks (content), At this time pay the producer will only be for public content.

The SAFE Network is going to compete with and complement the Internet that we love to hate today. Instead of data being relatively open and accessible, the SAFE Network has been designed to securely encrypt all data within the network. This will make privacy the default. If users want their information to be public that is of course no problem, but the way the network is designed, users will have to opt-out of privacy.
This will be a completely brand new grassroots Internet. The massive privately owned server farms that own the data of today’s internet will be replaced by a decentralized network of computers that encrypt user’s files and divide them into many small parts that are duplicated and stored in many places all around the world.
Anyone can join the network anonymously by donating a portion of their hard drive space, computing power and bandwidth.
For contributing their computing resources, the users will receive safecoins and in order to use the computing resources of the network, users will need to have and spend safecoins.
The SAFE Network will be able to do everything the Internet does today, but because it has such a different infrastructure, it will do it in a different way.
Here is a short list of some of the benefits of this restructuring: Denial of service attacks will be useless, in fact the more people use the same websites, the better they will perform.
Cloud storage will be completely private, relatively cheap and always accessible.
Messages, email, and VOIP will be encrypted by default.
Websites will never experience downtime and cannot be censored.
Social networks’ data will be owned by the users and they can choose who has access to it.
Mass surveillance on this network will be impossible; no one will be able to collect your browsing data.
Underutilized computing resources can be monetized.

Why would an average person actually choose to use Bitcoin?

I understand all the ideological reasons for why someone might want to choose Bitcoin. Most of them are fairly crazy, but at least they're there. What I don't get are the practical benefits, why an average person would actually choose to use them. If you aren't worried about the government or the banks or planning to get rich quickly 2140, then what can Bitcoin actually do for you? That's the part that nobody has really managed to explain so far in any of the threads, at least as far as I can remember.
To be fair, we understand the currency, it's inner workings, and thus its potential quite well, but while we profess how great it is, with $'s and stars in our eyes, we likely forget that the people we are talking to don't know or understand everything that we do. So, I think we should come up with some examples that answer the question of "why would an average person care" (or re-paste them from older necro threads). Here are some of mine:
1) It lets you send money overseas cheaper than using a bank wire (FIAT > BTC > BTC > FIAT has way better fees and exchange rates than bank wire, Western Union, etc).
2) It lets anyone open a virtual bank account without needing access to a physical bank. For example, some banks charge fees and require minimum balances for accounts, which may be prohibitively expensive. Some areas around the world don't even have banks other than in far away big cities. And in some cases, it's easier to just create a new Bitcoin wallet to store money in, than it is to drive down to a bank, fill out forms, come up with profs of ID, wait days for them to be verified, and another week for your account to actually be ready to use (especially if you're looking for a small business account).
3) It lets you accept payments online easily and way cheaper than with VISA, PayPal, or other such services. Heck, you can even just get a bitcoin address from MtGox or any other exchange, set up your account to instantly exchange any received BTC for local currency, and you're done.
4) It lets you accept payments over e-mail or any other service that can transmit text (even photos, as seen on girlsgonebitcoin). Some sellers may not have the means to build a website, but can still send out an invoice, asking to send payments to a specific address. (i.e. someone living in a poor country who only has access to an internet cafe, or someone who just doesn't have web skills).
5) It lets you accept tips or donations using any website. You can upload videos to YouTube, photos to Flickr, posts to a blog, music to Soundcloud, art to Deviantart, or comic strips to GoComics, and to accept donations all you need is to include a string of text in the description. No need to set up any money-accepting plugins, set up any bank or financial accounts, or rely on features provided by the service being used.
6) It lets you send money to places where PalPal or other money transmitting services are blocked, for example Russia or India, and is much cheaper for sending money to family in other countries. Even if that country they can't send money to is US, as in the example of the parents in Iran sending $2,000 to their college student son living here.
7) It lets you send huge sums of money overseas quickly and cheaply. If you were in US and you needed to pay $1,000,000 for a shipment from China, using normal methods of wiring money would take two or more weeks, and will cost more than $25,000 for the transaction. With Bitcoin, it takes a few hours, and costs $12,000 or less.
8) It lets you send micropayments better than anything else out there. It's easy and practically free to send $0.01 to anyone else using BTC, but would cost about $0.25 for just the fee to use the USD/EUR system. Any micropayment system that uses USD/EUR would have to sit on top of a larger system that stores all the money in a single large account, and all micropayments would have to be done as accounting entries within that account, instead of money actually moving around (i.e. you have to fund the system with a large payment, do your micropayment transactions, and withdraw when your fund is big enough again). This means micropayments using USD/EUR are restricted to only within specific services (i.e. your pre-paid micropayments fund that you use to pay for news articles can only be used within that news website)
9) It lets you create programs and services with their own bank accounts (the software stores value, as opposed to value always being linked to a real world person and a real world outside-the-service bank account). The Reddit tipbot is an excellent example of this, and would be impossible with USD/EUR, since to build it using FIAT, someone would have to open a real world bank account under their name (with all the forms, proofs of ID, etc), set it up to accept money transfers from others using PayPal, VISA, or something else, which will charge fees, have nasty exchange rates, have to keep to strict AML regulations, and be restricted to certain specific countries. Plus it would have all the micropayment issues mentioned above. With Bitcoin, all the "banking" is done with software, requiring no permissions, and no single programmer's name has to be linked with any bank accounts.
10) It lets you instantly fund USD/EUR based accounts around the world. The small LLC I started up keeps a BTC cash account for minor business expenses, and my business partners around the world will have Bitcoin funded VISA debit cards (as soon as Bitinstant releases them). That way, all the money is stored safely in the business vault, and if they need to pay for any business expenses, no matter where they are on the planet, or what their home currency is, I can fund their cards from home within 10 minutes. That's impossible with ACH, wires, or whatever else is out there.
11) It lets you link a payment account to a contract using address signing. For example, Person A agrees to buy Person B's debt. They write up an agreement contract, and instead of signing it with PGP keys, they sign it with A's and B's bitcoin addresses. Then money is sent from Address A to Address B, and any repayments are sent from Address B to Address A. That way, Person B can't claim that they never received the money, and Person A can't claim that they are still owed more than they really are, since all transactions are publicly verifiable on the block chain using the very addresses that were used to sign the contract. There is no need for any legal disputes of who owes what, since the blockchain keeps both parties honest (I actually did this already).

EDIT: 12) Usenet has recently gone through the Wikileaks experience, with copyright behemoths pressuring VISA, PayPal, et all, to stop processing payments for Usenet service providers. Many have switched to Bitcoin since then, and I personally know Usener user who followed, now buying his btc from me for that purpose.
